Braces can be fixed or unfixed.

Orthodontic treatments that are done with fixed braces allow better control of tooth positions.

There are 2 types of fixed braces: labial (bonded on the outer surface of the teeth) braces and lingual (bonded on the inner surface of teeth) braces.

Labial braces come in two forms: metal braces and ceramic braces.

Metal braces are usually done in teenagers. Ceramic braces are often done by adults as they are less visible.

Orthodontic treatment with lingual braces is performed with the braces bonded on the inner surfaces of the teeth. They are also called invisible braces.

A new treatment appliance called the Invisalign system (developed in the United States) is now available in Singapore.

In Invisalign system, clear plastic trays called aligners are fabricated with the aid of computer-assisted stimulation.

Average cost of treatment ranges from S$3000 to S$6000 for metal braces, S$5000 to S$8000 for ceramic braces and S$8000 to S$15000 for lingual braces. Treatment fees can be paid in monthly installments over the course of treatment of 1 to 2 years.
